Auburn Woodturning began in Hawthorn in 1947. So if you want something special, detailed or just a little different you will be pleased to have found this unique little business. Our methods, virtually unchanged in over sixty years still use the original lathes and hand chisels of those early days. Today we still offer standard range period home products and the same custom hand woodturning service of the past. Many of which can be seen on the old homes of Melbourne’s inner suburbs. Hand turning verandah posts and making period pieces used to restore homes to their former glory. It was during this time that Auburn Woodturning entered the period home product market. The revival of old homes became the trend bringing with it a demand for homes from Colonial, Victorian, Edwardian and Federation architectural eras. As interest grew in the life and times of early Australia Melbournian's developed a strong desire to recreate the past. During the 1970’s it diversified making furniture components and restoration pieces for the growing antique market. In its early days the business manufactured fashionable standard lamps popular in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Throughout this time we have been providing builders, furniture makers, antique restorers and heritage home enthusiasts with handmade traditional and custom wood products. Known locally as 'the woodturners' it is believed to be Melbourne oldest surviving hand woodturning business. (more).
